Determining your door swing

Single Interior Door

Standing with the door swinging AWAY from you, the side the hinges are on determines Left or Right.

Where you are in the room does not matter in this case. Even if you have to imagine standing inside of a closet! As long as the door is swinging away from you, the side the hinges are on determines the swing.

Interior Pair with lock

Standing on the outside of the room, which door would you

like to be your “active” door, will determine your swing.

Exterior Single Door

There are two steps to determining your Exterior Door swing.

  1. With the door swinging AWAY from you, the side the hinges are on determines Left or Right.

  2. Next, the door swinging into the house or out of the house, determines Inswing or Outswing.

Both those steps together determine the swing for an exterior door with a sill.

Exterior Pair

There are two steps too determining your Exterior Pair Door swing.

  1. The doors swinging into the house or out of the house determines Inswing or Outswing

  2. Once you have determined that, standing where the door will swing AWAY from you, your active door will be on the left or the right hand side.

Both of those steps together determine the swing for an Exterior pair with Sill

(tip: an outswing pair will seal better against the elements and works well for exposed patio doors)
